Nvidia’s smooth motion is now compatible with Vulkan, benefiting emulators

Nvidia has expanded support from its Smooth Motion technology to API Vulkan at some point last week. The company has not booked the update, but an attentive user shared an image on Reddit showing the API alongside DirectX 11 and 12 on the feature list.

In addition to contributing to Vulkan -based games (which are not many), expanded support can benefit a lot of Linux users. Emulators like Proton and DXVK use the API to run in the open system made for Steam on Windows, and it will now be possible to enjoy Smooth Motion in them.

Smooth Motion is a frame generation technology, but it works directly on the driver. Unlike the multi Frame Generation, which is part of DLSS and should be implemented in the game by Devs, Smooth Motion can work in any game as long as it is compatible with API.

The moment we write this post, however, only users of RTX 50 will be able to take advantage of the news of the NVIDIA resource.

Smooth motion supports only RTX 50

Nvidia’s tool for generating frames at the time of NVIDIA, so far, works only in its latest generation of video cards, the RTX 50. The company has already promised one day to expand its support to RTX 40, but we don’t have a date yet to happen.

In addition, Nvidia does not seem to have plans to take the smooth motion to older generations, such as RTX 30 and RTX 20.

It is a contrast to the Posture of AMD, which made its analogous resource available, the Fluid Motion Frames, in several generations of its Radeon GPUS. AFMF, however, does not use it for its generation of frames, offering results often considered inferior to the smooth motion.

Nvidia’s frame generation tool, now compatible with Vulkan, can be activated through the Nvidia App.
