Last Wednesday (10), NVIDIA confirmed that it will start using a new locator technology in its GPUs for corporate customers. Therefore, the company hopes to be able to detect contraband by knowing with great accuracy where the components manufactured by it are operating.

The company’s intention is to more easily discover where deviations are occurring, to prevent its products from reaching places where they are prohibited. The decision is mainly motivated by the fact that, even with export bans to China, much of its hardware ends up in the country through “alternative” means.

According to NVIDIA, your tracker will work from a software solutionwhich has already been shown behind closed doors to some commercial partners. It will work by activating some components considered confidential on your GPUs, especially those aimed at artificial intelligence tasks.

How will the NVIDIA system work?

Reuters states that NVIDIA’s solution works integrated with the software that allows customers to check the performance of purchased systems. The location of the components will be estimated based on the time between the time a command is activated and the moment it reaches NVIDIA’s own servers.

This way, the company will be able to have an approximate location of where its hardware is located, which will not necessarily be 100% accurate. On its official blog, it stated that it intends to open source the solution in the near future, allowing security researchers to examine it in detail.

NVIDIA states that, for its customers, the main advantage of the monitoring system will be to allow easier management of purchased inventories. She also explains that the system does not give her any control over the functioning of the hardware, as the solution does not have the ability to remotely turn them off or send commands to them.

At least initially, the new monitoring system will only be applied to the Blackwell line, considered the corporation’s most modern and safest. However, it also has plans to extend the feature to Hopper and Ampere chips if suitable conditions present themselves.
