This week we had the official announcement of the RTX 5050 – both the version for available notebooks and desktops, which arrives in July. With the announcement came confirmation that the PC model uses GDDR6 while the mobile version of the plate uses GDDR7. Now we have one of the first statements of a representative of Nvidia trying to explain the reasons for the decision.
Ben Briero, Director of Global Relations for Nvidia, talked about it on social networks. Answering a Hardware Canucks profile post, the executive says the following:

“GPU for RTX 5050 notebooks has been optimized with the best energy efficiency for great battery life laptops. Thus, G6 is the best choice for desktops and love efficient G7 is the best choice for laptops.”
While greater efficiency can be a justification for GDDR7 in notebooks, it is not an explanation for GDDR6 in desktops. This is because the new generation is not only more efficient, it also delivers more performance. The fastest GDDR6 modules reach 20gbps, while the slower GDDR7 starts at 28Gbps.

Nvidia focuses on notebooks to talk about RTX 5050
The shrotting post is followed by an answer just mentioning that GDDR7 is not only more efficient, but also faster. The executive again talks about the advantages of energy saving and less heating of memories in notebooks, but does not mention what would be the advantages of GDDR6 in desktops.

It is speculated that Nvidia has opted for GDDR6 on RTX 5050 for PCs to get a more competitive price on its dedicated entry video card. The shrotting statements seem to indicate that the company wanted to choose GDDR7 where its advantages would be more noticeable for the customer – that is, for battery life.
But for some reason the executive does not talk very directly about using GDDR6 on desktops, so we are still a little at the speculation level.
