We have seen AMD, Intel and Qualcomm increasingly focusing on chips with cores aimed at AI processing, the NPUs. For NVIDIA, this technology is for basic tasks involving Artificial Intelligence and argues that its RTX GPUs are the premium chips for the AI PC segment.
We know that NVIDIA already dominates shipping AI chips aimed at enterprises, but in the consumer AI PC segment, NPUs have attracted more attention from everyday users, as they are present in the AMD Ryzen and Intel Core series of easy access, especially notebooks, with Qualcomm coming soon with its Snapdragon X series.
Now NVIDIA is dividing this segment into entry-level AI PC and premium AI PC. Jensen Huang’s company enters the second category, delivering many times more performance with its RTX GPUs.
According to the technology industry giant, NPUs present in series such as Ryzen 8040 and Core Ultra 100 deliver between 10 and 45 TOPS, while their GPUs range from 100 to 1,300 TOPs. And this has been in the hands of users since 2018 with the arrival of the Turing series and the RTX 20, with more than 100 million users since then.
In other words, while a gaming PC, for example, that has a GeForce RTX already achieves high performance with AI, new users who do not intend to have a high-end notebook or a desktop PC, but want to deal with AI at some level, need resort to notebooks equipped with the series mentioned above.
NVIDIA also says that performance in content creation with image and video editing, video upscaling, productivity, gaming and development is basic with current NPUs. On the other hand, its chips present in the GeForce series and for professional use deliver “faster performance” and “better quality” in all these aspects.
The most basic GeForce RTX GPUs, delivering between 15 and 20 TOPS, are the RTX 2050 and RTX 3050, slightly better performance than the fastest NPU present in Ryzen 8040 APUs with first generation XDNA cores.
According to NVIDIA, the company dominates this premium AI PC segment from end to end, “as the RTX 4070 is enough to beat the fastest Radeon” in tasks that involve processing for Artificial Intelligence.
Remembering that both AMD and Intel promise great improvements in performance via NPU with their new technologies that will be launched later this year. Furthermore, there is also Qualcomm which already promises to deliver good performance with its first generation of Snapdragon X.
