Nvidia announced this weekend that it decided to completely make Open Source its Physx and Flow technologies. This may confuse some readers, since the company had already made the Physx SDK open a few years ago, but it wasn’t the technology completely. Now it is possible for moders and programmers to move the resources as they want.
“With over 500 CUDA kernels feeding features such as rigid bodies dynamics, fluid simulation and deformable objects, the GPU Physx represents one of the most advanced CUDA and GPU programming uses for real -time simulations,” says Nvidia in her official post. “We hope this launch will be a valuable resource for learning, experimentation and development throughout the community.”

Physx SDK is released along with Flow, a resource library for real -time fluid simulation based on sparse grid. SDKs can be downloaded for free from Github.

Physx is Open Source at an interesting moment
The moment Nvidia has chosen to make its technology open source completely draws attention. RTX 50 do not support Physx in 32-bit applications, precisely the generation of games in which the feature was most popular.
Thus, most games that feature the feature do not run with great quality in Nvidia’s most modern GPUs. The Witcher 3, Metro 2033, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag are some examples of games that should not fluidly run with Physx connected to Blackwell -based video cards.

Making Physx Open Source does not solve the problem, but helps the lives of those who are willing to solve. Dedicated moders and programmers now have more tools to help the feature to run with quality for their favorite games in Nvidia’s new GPUs.
It would be interesting to see this happen to check out the technology running in much more powerful plates, as it has always been very demanding hardware, even in the GPUS where it should be fully compatible.
