It’s not uncommon to see existing graphics card models being relaunched with other GPUs. That’s the case now with the new GeForce RTX 3050 mobile, which will use the RTX 4060 desktop GPU: AD106according to information in the NVIDIA driver.

In other words, instead of using an Ampere GPU (like the GA107 normally used), which is the architecture present in the RTX 30, the entry-level SKU will be equipped with a GPU from the Ada Lovelace generation, which equips the RTX 40.

Interestingly, the RTX 4050 and RTX 4060 for laptops use the AD107 GPU, unlike the AD106 in the desktop models, including the two Ti versions with different amounts of VRAM. So it’s a bit odd to see the new GeForce RTX 3050 mobile use a higher-end SKU than one that’s more appropriate for its tier.

New RTX 3050 may have advantages of Ada Lovelace GPUs

The mobile RTX 3050 found in notebooks available on the market has 2,048 CUDA cores. The smallest implementation of the AD106 GPU, which is in the desktop RTX 4060, has 3,072 cores. So we can assume that the new version of the entry-level GPU may have something in between the two values.

Another advantage of using an Ada Lovelace chip is that the capabilities involving ray tracing and machine learning processing, used in DLSS, are greater, as this architecture has new generations of cores focused on this work.

Speculation aside, there has been no official announcement of the new GeForce RTX 3050, nor the specifications of this GPU. Furthermore, when these models are relaunched with changes in specifications, there is never a fuss about it, especially when it comes to mobile models.

The fact is that the original RTX 3050 is starting to be left behind by integrated graphics. Different leaked benchmarks have already shown us that the Radeon 890M iGPU, based on AMD’s RDNA 3.5 architecture, already has a chance to retire NVIDIA’s Ampere mobile GPU with lower consumption and without the need for a dedicated graphics chip.

This is a trend not only with AMD’s integrated graphics, which are generally the strongest, but also with Intel’s Core Ultra, especially the next generation with iGPU Battlemage. Both series have yet to be released.

Currently, it is no longer so easy to find notebooks equipped with the RTX 3050 in Brazil, as this GPU has been replaced by the RTX 4050. The few existing models cost more than R$4,500.
