NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 delivers 2% less performance than GDDR6X

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics cards with GDDR6 memory are now available through some partner manufacturers. Tests by WCCFtech, comparing this SKU with the version equipped with GDDR6X memory, show that the gaming performance difference is minimal, less than 3% at 4K.

The switch from GDDR6X to GDDR6 video memory drops the speed from 21 to 20 Gbps, resulting in about 5% less bandwidth. The rest of the configurations between the two models are identical, so the site’s tests make it clear what impact the change in VRAM has.

In synthetic benchmarks, the difference is tiny and doesn’t even reach half a percent. In games, the maximum difference between the GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6X and GDDR6 occurs at 4K resolution. On average, the new version is only 2.3% lower, this difference drops to 1% at 1440p and 0.2% at FullHD.

If we analyze isolated cases, we have two situations where there is a difference of 10 and 14 FPS between the two GPU models. This happens in Metro Exodus at 4K and 1440P, where the frame rate drops from 96 to 86 FPS, and 154 to 140 FPS, respectively.

Otherwise, the behavior of the GeForce RTX 4070, regardless of the memory used, will be the same. Just to give you an idea, the third biggest difference in performance still occurs with Metro Exodus and Doom Eternal at only 5%. The rest are below 4-3%.

Some video card manufacturers that partner with NVIDIA have not identified the change from GDDR6X to GDDR6 memory in the boxes of the new RTX 4070. The Galax model received by WCCFtech, however, makes clear the use of less fast memory.

In theory, by using memories with less advanced configurations, it is expected that this will be reflected in lower prices, but this does not seem to be the case. ASUS, for example, has spared no effort and has already started making the new model available even more expensive than the original.

The ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 12GB GDDR6 EVO graphics card has been announced to start selling for $569.99 in the US – $15 more than the white RTX 4070 with GDDR6X and “OC”. It’s worth noting that it’s currently selling for $554.99, as it’s been a while since its initial launch.

So far, it is not yet possible to find the GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory in Brazil. There are still several models equipped with GDDR6X for sale here.
