We’re heading towards the end of the GeForce RTX 3060’s reign as the most popular GPU on Steam. But what could replace it isn’t a desktop graphics card, but a notebook GPU. The mobile GeForce RTX 4060 grew enough in August to close in on the current most popular GPU on Valve’s platform.
The results of Steam’s new hardware survey (which shouldn’t be taken as absolute truth, but gives us an idea) show that the RTX 3060 fell 0.37%, but the mobile RTX 4060 grew 1.34%, enough to put the entry-level Ada Lovelace GPU just 0.96% behind the Ampere GPU.
RTX 4060 and RTX 3060 mobile were the fastest growing GPUs
The GeForce RTX 4060 for notebooks was the fastest-growing GPU in August, by far. The second fastest-growing GPU was the RTX 3060, also for notebooks, with growth of 0.50% last month.
The successor to the RTX 3060 for desktop PCs has seen a drop in the number of users on Steam. Coming in sixth place, the RTX 4060 fell from 3.47 to 3.41% from July to August.
Among AMD’s GPUs, the one that grew the most in August, but with a still insignificant number, was the Radeon RX 6750 GRE with 0.06%. The other graphics chips on the red side registered growth of less than half a percent, not counting the several others that saw a decrease in users.

Another interesting piece of data revealed by Steam’s latest hardware survey is in relation to the most popular new operating system. With 3.36% growth, Windows 11 is now on 50.81% of computers owned by users of Valve’s platform. This leadership was also possible thanks to the 3.29% drop in Windows 10.
AMD processors also saw growth, which was proportional to Intel’s decline. Closing August with a 0.72% increase, AMD CPUs account for 33.26%, compared to 66.69% for Intel Core. Models with 6 cores continue to dominate (32.45%), followed by octa-cores (20.81%), with quad-cores coming next with 17.23%.
As things stand, there’s a chance that the September report will show us the new GPU that’s most popular among Steam users, allowing them to collect hardware data from their PC.
There is a chance that the GeForce RTX 4060 mobile will overtake the RTX 3060 desktop this month, if we consider the evolution that the Ada Lovelace GPU for notebooks has had in recent months.
