The supply of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 GPUs has been reduced and several commercial partners are beginning to worry about a potential shortage of hardware from the line in the near future.

Multiple sources claim that we could see a shortage of “Ada Lovelace” graphics cards next month, as production lines have been “tightened” and supply has dropped by up to 50%. Based on specific SKUs, the most affected will reportedly be the GeForce RTX 4070 and GeForce RTX 4060.

There are different points of view on what caused the reduction in the supply of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 GPUs – among them, some claim that it is due to the focus on hardware aimed at artificial intelligence, others point out that there are problems in supplying GDDR6X memories and it is also seen as a “strategy” by the manufacturer.

NVIDIA’s reasons for reducing supply

Expanding a bit on the statements seen above, some Taiwanese websites point out that suppliers like TSMC are focusing more on the production of chips aimed at AIs – such as the focus on the “Blackwell” line – with the supply of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 GPUs taking a back seat in their factories.

Other sources from Asia, via BoardChannels, point out that some GDDR6X chips had “quality control issues” and this caused a bottleneck in the entire supply chain – compromising the entire production line. These rumors indicate that this problem is short-term and that manufacturers are already resolving the issue.

UDN also mentions that NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 GPUs – such as the RTX 4060 (involving the common version and the “Ti”) – had a strategic reduction with a price increase that extended to high-end video cards such as the RTX 4090, RTX 4080 and RTX 4070.

The plan is simple, reduce supply to avoid excessive stock flows around the launch of the next generation of “RTX 50” GPUs. Considering that NVIDIA and its commercial partners had a lot of problems with this between the RTX 30 “Ampere” and the Ada Lovelace generation, it would be something “credible”.

NVIDIA doesn’t reveal its plans

Regardless of the narrative, the only thing that is certain is that NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 GPUs have had their supply reduced on the market – without any statement or declaration coming directly from the manufacturer to explain what is happening.

With the imminent arrival of the “RTX 50”, it is also common knowledge that interest in the recent line may decline – justifying a reduction in its production, as the public tends to wait to acquire modern hardware.

However, NVIDIA also did not reveal when the GeForce RTX 50 will hit stores. Rumors suggest that the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards will arrive in January, with announcements being revealed during CES 2025, but nothing has been confirmed by the manufacturer.

It is important to note that the drop in supply of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 GPUs could lead to a price increase – which may or may not be temporary – however, this has not been seen yet.
