An engineer from Nvidia corrected a problem that was negatively affecting GPUS AMD performance on Linux. The attitude, however, was not completely altruistic, since the bug was introduced by himself.

Importantly, there is no evidence that the problem was created by bad faith. Last week he tried to increase the PCI Bar space to values above 10TIB in AMD boards, but this ended up making the system identify the installed GPU as limited, impairing its performance.

The situation draws attention for involving a Nvidia engineer stirring the drivers of a rival company, AMD. However, none of this is uncommon in the open software segment (Foss – Free Open Source Software). Even it is not uncommon for attempts to come out of the Culatra and introduce new problems, so it is an “unpaid rule” that those responsible correct their own mistakes.

The bug happened because Linux divides memory into different areas, associating one of them with the GPU. The bug made the kernel artificially increase the total RAM for GPUS AMD Radeon to 64TIB. Since the video card does not have access to such a wide range, the opposite effect happened, with the system identifying the component as limited and offering only 4GB of memory to work.

Linux 6.15-RC1 already includes the correction for GPUS AMD

The Phoronix staff points out – and praises – the effort of the Nvidia engineer to deliver the correction before the weekend. Apparently the new code was ready on the 4th, which allowed it to be included in Linux 6.15-RC1, available last Sunday, April 6.

In October last year we were estimated that 4.4% of desktop computer users use Linux, and this represented growth. It is a small fraction of people, and within that slice, only people with GPUS AMD were affected, which should not have added many people.

However, it is precisely this kind of agility and willingness to solve problems coming from the community itself that attracts people to open source software.
