With artificial intelligence responsible for 86% of NVIDIA’s revenue, the company has earned a prominent place in the technology industry. However, increasing competition from rivals such as AMD and giants such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google, which develop their own chips to reduce dependence on their chips, has led the company to diversify its operations.
Robotics, in this scenario, appears as a strategic and promising bet. Nvidia’s goal is to lead the market with a “Full-Stack” approach, offering solutions that range from advanced AI modeling software to the processors that power robots.
According to Deepu Talla, vice president of robotics at NVDIA, the sector has reached a “turning point”. Technologies such as AI generation and hyper-realistic simulations can already bring the performance of robots in virtual tests closer to their real-world applications.
Robotics’ “ChatGPT moment”
Talla predicts that the robotics industry is about to experience its “ChatGPT moment,” in reference to the radical transformation that generative models like ChatGPT have brought to artificial intelligence. He believes the same type of disruptive impact will occur in robotics in the coming years.
NVIDIA isn’t starting from scratch. With tools such as DGX servers, used to train AI models, and the Omniverse platform, which allows real scenarios to be simulated with high precision, the company has already laid the foundations for its entry into this sector. These technologies have proven effective, for example, in simulations of robots used by companies such as Amazon and Toyota, as well as collaborations with Boston Dynamics.
In addition, NVIDIA is preparing the launch of Jetson Thorthe next generation of compact computers for humanoid robots. Scheduled for the first half of 2025, the device promises to be a game changer, serving as the “brain” for the next generation of advanced robots.
