NVIDIA released a new driver this week, still in beta version, for Linux. GeForce Driver 590.44.01, which arrived on December 2, draws attention because it does not include Game Ready support for GTX 900 and GTX 10 series GPUs, also known, respectively, as Maxwell and Pascal.

As VideoCardz recalls, this doesn’t come as a surprise, since NVIDIA had already announced that its drivers in versions 580 would be the last to bring Game Ready to these older cards. It is worth remembering that the GTX 900 based on the Maxwell architecture arrived in 2014, and the GTX 10 model based on Pascal two years later, in 2016.

On the NVIDIA website, these cards are still listed as supported, but Linux users have confirmed on forums that, in practice, the 590.44.01 driver has already ignored these models.

NVIDIA drivers arrive first for Linux

It is normal for new NVIDIA drivers to be made available on Linux first, and they do not always remain exactly the same when they arrive on Windows. This means that, for the most used operating system in the world, the company could change its mind and even extend support to these older GPUs.

But this is a difficult bet to make, since the GeForce owner has been warning for a long time that the GTX 900 and GTX 10 are falling behind. The initial forecast was to close in October, but the 581.80 driver, made available in November, still brought Game Ready to these cards.

This is important information to highlight. What is ending first is Game Ready support for new releases for Maxwell and Pascal GPUs in driver updates. These models have not yet reached their official “end of life” (EOL).

This is because the company has also promised to offer security updates every quarter for the GTX 900 and GTX 10. In other words, there will still be a while before the models are completely phased out.
