A NVIDIA e Qualcomm would be considering moving production of its next-generation 2nm chips to Samsung Foundry. The reason would be that TSMC’s costs to manufacture new 2nm chips are too high.

However, 2nm at Samsung Foundry is not the same thing as 2nm at TSMC.

The performance of Samsung Foundry’s advanced processes is not the best, as the 4nm chips it made for Qualcomm were overheating and experiencing performance issues. Meaning this could be the last time Samsung Foundry will attempt to produce high-performance 2nm chips for NVIDIA and Qualcomm

If it fails, TSMC will be inundated with orders in 2026, 2027 and beyond.

At the moment, TSMC is leading the way with 2nm node production, with a yield rate of approximately 60%and carries out process tests with customers such as Apple, NVIDIA and Qualcomm, which are large TSMC customers.

However, according to new reports in the Korean press, the high price of TSMC’s new 2nm chips and limited production capacity have caused Apple to delay the use of 2nm chips until 2026while NVIDIA and Qualcomm are now considering switching to Samsung Foundry.

In other words, it was the high prices of TSMC’s 2nm chips and their low quantity, given that the company will not significantly increase production until 2026, that meant that NVIDIA and Qualcomm did not want to depend too much on TSMC, thus emerging rumors of a change to the Samsung Foundry.

These companies hope to diversify its supply chain and have Samsung Foundry manufacture its new chips at 2nm.

For its part, Samsung Foundry needs all the semiconductor customers it can get, and if it can attract two of the biggest, NVIDIA and Qualcomm, to its next-generation 2nm process (SF2) node, it will be a big win for the company. South Korean semiconductor industry against Taiwanese TSMC.

Just this year, NVIDIA surpassed Apple and became the most valuable company in the world thanks to its AI cards segment. Microsoft alone purchased 500,000 NVIDIA Hopper GPUs for AI in 2024.

The company’s success was so great that its rivals have invested in their own hardware to become more competitive.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm expects to overtake AMD in PCs by 2029.

In fact, the company was reportedly interested in buying part of Intel, with rumors suggesting that it had made a proposal. However, it withdrew due to regulatory difficulties.
