NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 5090 FOUNDERS Edition reported reports of 12V-2 × 6 connectors melted due to the use of third party power cables.
A recent example published in Reddit highlighted an incident involving a moddiy cable used in conjunction with an Asus Rog Loki source, where the connector began melting during a Battlefield 5 session.
The system operated with a consumption of 500 to 520 watts, above the recommended limit of 450W, causing damage to both GPU and source connector.
The 12V-2 × 6 connectors, also called 12VHPWR, are designed to deliver high power to state-of-the-art GPUS, such as RTX 5090. However, its operation requires precise pins alignment and a safe connection.
When low quality cables are used, there is an increased risk of overheating due to resistance points, especially in the corners of connectors, where temperatures tend to focus.

Why avoid unofficial cables?
Unofficial cables are often chosen for aesthetic reasons or by offering greater flexibility in component management, but, as reports, may compromise system safety.
This problem is not new to the RTX line; At RTX 4090, similar difficulties were recorded with third party connectors, which generated concern in the gamer community.
Overheating in RTX 5090 12V-2 × 6 connectors occurs mainly in third party cables, exposing GPUs and feeding to irreversible damage
NVIDIA already faces criticism for the limited availability of its RTX 5090 GPUS, exacerbating challenges for users who need to replace damaged equipment.
In addition, recent tests even pointed to a 5% performance drop by using inadequate adapting connectors, reinforcing the need to choose original or approved accessories by manufacturers.
Strategies to avoid problems
To avoid damage caused by low quality cables, it is always recommended to use accessories supplied with the GPU or by the power supply manufacturer.
It is also essential to regularly inspect the cables in search of signs of wear or discoloration and ensure that the connectors are firmly fitted. Tracking system temperature, especially in operations above 450W, is another preventive step.

Using high power connectors
With the growing demand for high performance GPUS, such as RTX 5090, ensuring the quality and safety of connectors is essential to avoid incidents such as reported melting.
Nvidia and sources manufacturers need to work to improve the reliability of their products and educate consumers about the risks associated with the use of unofficial cables. Thus, the community must continue to be aware and prioritize certified components to protect its state -of -the -art hardware investments.
