Modders are creating a custom version of the Nintendo Wii to make one of the smallest working consoles we’ve ever seen. The project is called Kawaii – a play on the Japanese word for “cute” which, coincidentally, ends in “ii” like the game console.
The people responsible are known by their social media handles, Wesk Mods and YveltalGriffin. Their idea is to transform the Wii into a 6 x 6 cm square, just 1.6 cm thick. This small device would connect to a Switch-style base, where the connections for playing would be.
The dock is the bulk of the Kawaii, including four ports for GameCube controllers and a USB-C output. Renders of the final console even include a loop to actually hang the console like a keychain. The Kawaii connects to the dock via a pogo pin, like the ones used in Apple’s MagSafe docks.
The keychain version of the Nintendo Wii uses an Omega processor with reduced voltage and passive heat dissipation. That’s why it fits vertically in its base, leaving room for the back of the console, which is basically a heatsink.
Will it be possible to buy the Kawaii Wii?
The project’s creators seem determined to sell the Kawaii, even if only in small quantities. In an interview with RetroDodo, Wesk Mods says that the consoles will be manufactured in China, and he needs to secure an initial order of at least 30 units. It shouldn’t be too difficult, since he reveals on the BitBuilt forum that he expects a price tag of $55 per unit.
Finally, the modders also state that they intend to leave the project completely open when it is completed, so that people can make their own versions and modifications of Kawaii.
A form to obtain information from interested parties was opened, but it was quickly closed. Now we just have to wait and see how far the project goes. It is worth remembering that we know Nintendo’s opinion on the unauthorized use of its IPs.
