With the beginning of 2025, signs are beginning to strengthen that the official announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 will not take long. After the appearance of a supposed motherboard for the console, a patent registered by Nintendo became public in which it describes an upscale system similar to NVIDIA’s DLSS.
Registered in July 2023, the document how machine learning can be used to convert images at certain resolution to a higher standard. In addition to reducing the resources needed to generate them, the solution would also allow games to occupy a smaller space within physical or digital media.
According to Laura Kate Dale, who thoroughly investigated the patent related to the Nintendo Switch 2, the manufacturer itself describes that a game with 4K textures could take up 60 GB of space. However, when using the upscale solution from the 1080p standard, it will be possible to reduce the total size of the game to 20 GBmaking it compatible with the space of a conventional cartridge.
Although 1080p resolution was used as an example, the document registered by the Japanese company also describes cases in which the original resolution of an image may only be 540p. The idea is that, by working with several options, it will be possible to make games run in high resolution even within the limits of hardware with components worthy of a mobile device.
In this sense, something that should help the Nintendo Switch 2 is the fact that, like its predecessor, it is being built with help from NVIDIA. The company’s DLSS continues to stand out for its upscale capabilities, and implementing a specialized variation of it could end up bringing many advantages to the new device.
This is not the first upscale patent in Nintendo’s history: in 2020, it had registered a similar solution, but which was aimed at games running via streaming. So far, the company has not confirmed or even commented on any of the recent leaks, but remains committed to revealing its new console by the end of March this year.
