While the Japanese manufacturer is reportedly preparing the successor to the Nintendo Switch as one of its main upcoming releases, it also appears to be working on other releases. A filing on the US FCC website shows that the company is investing in a new wireless device with an internal motion sensor.

Although it has been removed from the website, the registration was noticed by outlets such as Eurogamer before this happened. Nintendo’s request was accompanied by a confidentiality request, ensuring that the main details about the product will only be known to the public at the end of March 2025.

That didn’t stop us from getting some basic details, like the shape of the device: square with curved edges when viewed from below. In addition, it will use a USB-C connection as a power source, in addition to offering a 24 GHz mmWave sensor. From the description, the device can even be used as a way to “talk” to other accessories and apps.

Nintendo registration raises mysteries

While the date for the end of the confidentiality of the registration coincides with the rumors about the launch of the Switch 2, the new product may not be directly related to it. That’s because it uses the code CL0-001, which suggests that it is being treated as a separate initiative by Nintendo.

This feature should help fuel several speculations about the nature of the motion-sensing device, given that it does not appear to be related to other products from the manufacturer. mmWave sensors are typically used by “internet of things” solutions to detect the presence of people in an environment, analyzing their activities or initiating procedures such as turning on the light, for example.

While Nintendo has previously expressed an interest in offering devices for the medical and healthcare industry, it remains unclear whether its new filing has anything to do with that. So far, what is certain about the new filing is that it has been deemed sensitive and is being kept secret because “contains technical information that has been considered a trade secret” that could be harmful if made public.
