Just yesterday (Tuesday, 5th) Nintendo officially announced that Nintendo’s next console (Switch 2) will be backwards compatible with games from the current library Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch online service will also be available on the upcoming system.
Yesterday was the day of Nintendo’s shareholder meeting, and with that we had many expectations of what new things the company could reveal for the first time to the public and its partners. In addition to more sales information, we also have some announcements about the successor to the Nintendo Switch, but no official reveal yet.
The information was shared during Nintendo’s Q&A session with its investors and Nintendo’s president himself, Shuntaro Furokawashared the information through a tweet on the official Nintendo Corporation account, as we can see above.
This is Furukawa. In today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software is also playable on the Nintendo Switch successor. Nintendo Switch Online will also be available on the Nintendo Switch successor. More information about the Nintendo Switch successor, including its compatibility with the Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.

Nintendo follows its old tradition of having backwards compatible consoles
Although backwards compatibility was a certain tradition between several generations of Nintendo consoles, there was still some concern about making this expectation official, especially since there was no backwards compatibility between the WiiU and the Switch.
Fortunately, there is now really no doubt that if you already have a Nintendo Switch, you can guarantee that you will play your games on its successor. What we still don’t know is whether games will receive patches to run better on the new consoletaking advantage of its greater hardware power.
We also don’t know how many games will receive these patches, to what extent this can be a general solution for various titles, including those published by third parties on the console or not. We will probably only have definitive answers to these questions at the announcement or perhaps only after the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
