Created by Nintendo to allow its fans to wake up to the sound of their favorite songs and sound effects — and never have the patience to listen to them again —, Alarmo has already shown its ability to act as something that goes beyond an alarm. The product is already the target of several hacks which, as tradition dictates, have already been used to make it run a version of Doom.
A video published last Sunday (3) by the GaryOderNichts channel shows that the device can run the id Software classic well, with controls that are made using its top button. While the title’s framerate seems a little low, it is still in a very usable state.
The decision to play Doom on the Nintendo Alarmo came after the developer realized that there were ways to run custom codes on the device. He proved this by making the device show a customized photo of a cat — after that, it was a simple matter of dedicating a few hours to adapt the FPS.
Doom no Alarmo still has some restrictions
According to the hack’s author, the version of Doom that is running on the smart alarm still has some restrictions. Among them is the fact that the title is running without any type of audio and need to deal with frequent compression and decompression of your assetswhich ends up harming its performance.
At the same time, GaryOderNichts clarified that it is possible to run the game directly from a USB device, without making any modifications to Alarmo. The entire process was duly documented and shared on GitHub, allowing any owner of the device to reproduce the experiment.
Sold for US$99 (R$557) in the United States, the new product proved to be quite popular among fans of the Japanese company and quickly sold out its first batch. Nintendo promises that it will continue to bring updates to it in the future, including sounds from series like Animal Crossing and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in its library.
