New phase of Celular Seguro increases cell phone returns

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) launched the new phase of the program Safe Cell Phone this Thursday (1st), focusing on recovery of stolen or misplaced cell phones.

This step is inspired by the Piauí system, which notifies users via WhatsApp who activate chips in devices marked as stolen or robbed. This functionality had already been advanced in Maybut it has only now been released to all those registered in the program.

How this new phase of Safe Cell Phone works

Minister Ricardo Lewandowski signed the move to increase the platform’s effectiveness. The priority now is to create a National Cell Phone Recovery Protocolto be developed in 90 days by a group from the ministry and security departments of 11 states.

The protocol will follow the example of Piauí, where the notification system helped to halve thefts and robberies of cell phones in Teresina, in addition to resulting in return of 8 thousand devices since its implementation in 2023.

The platform verifies the location and device used to activate a SIM card. If the phone is stolen, the person is summoned via WhatsApp to go to the police station for clarification. Without a receipt, the device must be handed over to the authorities for return to the owner.

The protocol also aims to integrate data nationally, facilitating police work across the country. It is worth noting that by June the program had already reached more than 56 thousand smartphones have already been blocked by the service.

This Safe Cellular update comes on the heels of the announcement that more than 2 million people registered in the system which helps block cell phones and bank accounts in case of theft, loss or robbery. In addition, the ministry reported that 68,000 blocking alerts have been issued so far, without detailing the requests.
