The NVME standard, widely used in SSD drives, received new specifications this week, reaching its 2.3 version with features aimed mainly to offer more safety and power settings. According to the NVM Express group behind the technology, updates reach a total of 11 NVME specifications.
Updates include Command Set specifications, management interface and boot, but the main update is the NVME 2.3 version of the technology base specification.
“The recently launched NVME specifications set introduces resources directly to operational challenges by offering improved control and visibility administrators about their storage for critical business and data centers,” said Amber Huffman, president of NVM Express.

The main new features of the update, according to the group behind its development, are the following (free translation):
- Fast Failure Path Recovery: Allows communication with the NVM subsystem through alternative channels, allowing rapid recovery in case of communication loss with a controller, to avoid data corruption and duplication of commands.
- Energy Limits Configuration: Offers full control over the maximum energy of an NVME device, particularly important for older systems with more limited energy capacities.
- “Self-reported” drive energy: Allows the host to measure and monitor the NVME device energy as well as its consumption throughout the life of the device to help maintain and sustainability.
- Namepace Hygiene: Allows cryptographic erasure hygiene in individual names, rather than impacting the entire NVM subsystem.
- Configurable Device Personality: Supports mechanisms that allow the host safely modify the NVM subsystem configuration, facilitating inventory management for drives suppliers.
The new specifications are more professional for professional use, and are now available for download from the official NVM Express website.
