Gigabyte this week unveiled a product to bring Thunderbolt 5 connections to virtually any system. Its new Thunderbolts 5 card uses the motherboard’s PCIe 4 connection, making the PC compatible with the technology capable of delivering up to 80Gbps in both directions and up to 120Gbps in one direction.

As shown in the official promotional image, the card offers three mini DisplayPort connections and two USB Type-C ports, all using Thunderbolt 5. It also comes with two 6-pin PCIe power connectors, so it can offer Power Delivery 3.1 of up to 100W. In other words, it is possible to power some devices directly through the connection, even some compatible monitors.

Gigabyte highlights the following features in its new Thunderbolts 5 card:

  • Board certified for Intel Thunderbolt 5
  • Itel JHL9580 Controller
  • Two Thunderbolt 5 Ports (USB-C)
  • Delivers up to 80Gb/s in two directions, or up to 120Gb/s in one direction
  • Provides maximum support for DisplayPort 2.1 with 8K@60Hz
  • Daisy-chain up to 10 devices (5 devices per port)

It is worth remembering that the Thunderbolt 4 generation reaches up to 40Gbps of bandwidth, so Thunderbolt 5 doubles performance in two directions and even triples it in just one direction. Gigabyte unfortunately has not yet spoken about the price or availability of its new card.

The current generation of Z890 motherboards will help to greatly popularize Thunderbolt 4, with many models integrating the controller into the chipset. Thunderbolt 5, however, is still in its infancy and not many compatible devices will be able to take advantage of the technology.

More about Thunderbolt:

With such advanced performance, the main use imagined for the new connection is in the implementation of external GPUs, a solution that has become popular. However, according to VideoCardz, we still do not have any accessory for an external video card that supports the technology.

In this way, Gigabyte may have gotten a little ahead of itself with its board curiously called Thunderbolts 5. However, the argument can also be made that it is precisely this type of product that will encourage the popularization of the technology.
