MSI motherboards with AMD X870E chipset (and some X870) will come with an 8-pin connector prepared to receive future GPUs from the RTX 50 line. The information was unofficially confirmed by one of the company’s representatives.
Taking advantage of Gamescom 2024, MSI showed the MPG X870E Carbon WiFi, one of its new boards with the X870E chipset prepared to receive Ryzen 9000 series processors. What caught the attention of the model was the presence of an 8-pin connector just below the PCIe ports.
Speaking to French website Cowcotland, an MSI representative confirmed that this connection provides more power to the PCIe Gen 5 lanes. Not only that, the connection would be there with the next generation of Nvidia graphics cards based on Blackwell in mind. However, the person did not want to confirm the information officially.
What has been confirmed, however, is that this connector will be present on all of the manufacturer’s X870E boards. This includes:
- MEG X870E Godlike
- MPG X870E Carbon WIFI
- X870E Gaming Plus WIFI
In addition to these models, some X870 boards will also feature the connection. They will be the PRO X870-P WiFi and the MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi.
MSI Prepares for PCIe Gen 5 Demands
The folks at VideoCardz provide a detailed breakdown of the voltage rating offered by MSI’s solution. The PCIe connector provides 75W by default, while the extra 8-pin connection will deliver up to an extra 150W. That’s a total of 225W on the PCIe port.

However, WCCFTech speculates that this shouldn’t be taken as a sign that the RTX 50 will be especially power hungry. The new generation of PCIe already requires more power, so it could be a preventative measure.
It’s worth noting that MSI isn’t the only one coming up with this type of design. ASUS, for example, offers a similar feature on its X870E ROG Crosshair Hero, but for now only on this model, which is its top of the line.
