MSI is adding a new power safety feature called GPU Safeguard+ to select MPG power supplies. The goal is to detect abnormal charging behavior on 12VHPWR and 12V-2×6 cables before they turn into problems with the connector or the cable itself..

Concern about the area comes after frequent reports of problems with 12VHPWR and 12V-2×6 cables in extreme situations. And a large number of cases of burned power adapters on RTX 50 cards were related to the company’s yellow-tipped connector.

As a result, a small accessories market has emerged around alternative solutions for cables and adapters. For its part, MSI is taking a different approach, implementing more monitoring in the power supply and making information available through software.

Live monitoring

The Safeguard+ GPU monitors the current in the 12V-2×6 connector in real time. It watches the six power wires and looks for current imbalances or instantaneous overcurrent. On models compatible with two 12V-2×6 outputs, monitoring is performed on both connectors.

When the power supply detects an anomaly, the system enters an alert phase. A beep sounds and MSI Center may display a pop-up alert with the status of the connector. The user has three minutes to reduce the load or stop the condition.

If the problem persists, MSI describes a forced protection step that results in a black screen while the beeping continues. The user is expected to turn off the PC and check for problems such as a partially seated plug.

MSI Center is also used for more comprehensive power supply telemetry. It displays real-time monitoring, alerts and logs, fan and power supply status, and a view of historical power consumption.

GPU Safeguard+ is listed for a MPG Ai1600TS PCIE5 e a MPG Ai1300TS PCIE5. MSI positions this as power supply-side protection rather than GPU-side power monitoring.

The MAG A1200PLS PCIE5 and MAG A1000PLS PCIE5 power supplies come with the Safeguard GPU, which supports 12V-2×6 Single cables and fewer monitoring options.

The company also showed the MSI Center dealing with a dual 12V-2×6 cabling layout, which matches the cabling used by some dual-connector graphics cards, such as MSI’s GeForce RTX 5090 LIGHTNING.
