MSI Afterbuner developer Unwinder has previously mentioned the possibility of “new hardware” support in the utility. Now he suggested that the engineering sample mentioned in October 2025 could be an MSI power supply.
And this coincides with MSI’s own power supply previews presented for CES 2026, which officially starts tomorrow, but today will already have some presentations from different companies.
The most likely target of the update is MSI’s new PCIe MPG Ai TS series of power supplies, which the company is promoting it based on a GPU-focused security feature.
MSI calls the feature “proactive and instant protection,” and its preview indicates GPU power monitoring via the 16-pin connectorrather than system-wide telemetry.

If this is the sample hardware, Afterburner could become the interface for this feature. That is, it will display protection status and feedback to the user when paired with the new power supplies.
This would also fit into the RTX 50 launch window, as the 12V-2×6 connector is once again a hot topic. And MSI’s own RTX 5090 Lightning is expected to use two 12V-2×6 connectors.

MSI has already named the two models it is presenting: MPG Ai1300TS PCIE5 and MPG Ai1600TS PCIE5. And the latter was photographed by an overclocker.
MSI claims that will fully reveal the feature at CES 2026 this week. This is also when you should find out how Afterburner will be supported and which GPUs, cables and protections it will be able to detect.
Technical Data Sheet (Still) Unavailable

The complete technical data sheet for the new source models is not yet available. However, the images suggest that the new power units have a dedicated USB connector on the chassis.
This indicates that communication between the source and the operating system will be direct, allowing real-time monitoring via software, probably through MSI Center.
This way, it is assumed that the system must act by monitoring oscillations or anomalies in the power delivery via the 12V-2×6 cable (successor to the 12VHPWR). Thus, if any instability is detected, the source can cut the power or adjust the electrical voltage parameters before any damage occurs.

The “PCIE5” designation also confirms native compatibility with the latest industry standards, eliminating the need for adapters for modern graphics cards.
Furthermore, if the technology delivers what it promises, MSI could set a new reliability standard for high-performance computer builds. And it removes the anxiety related to the integrity of power cables on workstations and gaming PCs.
