South Korean design studio LFD has come up with a concept for a revamped version of one of the most famous consumer electronics of all time, the Game Boy. By adding some elements that are already intrinsic to the line, such as the option with a translucent case, the designers involved in the project brought the idea of modularity to the portable console. Parts that can be interchangeable, and that work as extenders of the player’s experience with the product.
A big screen always close by
Instead of playing the game using the gamepads and screen integrated into the handheld, the detachable modules would allow the user to detach the pad module, as well as the projection module, located on the back of the Game Boy and enjoy the gameplay on a large screen, with the ability to project a screen much larger than the integrated display.
On the concept’s official Behance page, Those responsible for this idea make an association with the Nintendo Switch:
“Gamers prefer large screens and immersive experiences. They connect the Nintendo Switch to a TV or set up a widescreen monitor in their gaming room to enhance gameplay. However, these setups take up physical space, confining gamers to specific locations. If they want to play elsewhere, they face the hassle of moving the entire rig. Portable gaming devices could be an alternative, but the limited screen size and resolution cause eye strain.”
Among the images that exemplify this characteristic of the project, of breaking away from certain physical locations, without ceasing to play on a larger screen, they show what a person camping would look like using the projection module to achieve greater immersion.

Another integrated function, once the projection module is detachable, is to transform the screen integrated into the Game Boy into a large fingertip interaction area for supported games, such as a table tennis game, where movement on the screen corresponds to in-game action.
The product would also feature a modern interface and several color options for the product.
