Modder turns a PS1 into “Playstáceo”, the first crab console

Modder Gigerofoz, specializing in creating portable versions of old video games, decided to go for a project outside the box (or outside the cone?) And turned PS1 into a crustacean. Playstacean, which could be translated as playstace, is the slim version of the first modified PlayStation to look like a crab.

The idea did not come out of nowhere. Playstace, in fact, is the real version of an art created for some time by Anh Dang, one of those responsible for the concept arts of Riot, such as LOL and Valorant. Gingerofoz apparently liked the PS1 of Siriguejo so much that he decided to turn the video game into reality.

The most interesting part of the project, of course, is that the playstace really works. Not only does it run games, but also tweezers can be used to play. The body of the video game, at first, seems not to have been so altered, but has gone through complex modifications. Even clippings on the motherboard were needed, and Gingerofoz says he spent a week just trying to leave the ports of the angled memory cards.

Much of the project became possible with the aid of 3D printing, so it is no wonder the manufacturer of an X1 Carbon sponsored the video where Gingerofoz shows in detail the construction of the playstace.

One of the most striking features of Modified PS1’s look and functionality is tweezers, which can be used as controls. In addition to their functionality, the paws are articulated, resulting in a divided control for the first PlayStation, with analog levers.

As a curiosity, and something with which the people who lived the first generation of PlayStation may identify: Playstace is a “unlocked” console. Taking advantage of his modifications, Gingerofoz took the opportunity to insert one of the chips that circumvent the video game DRM to be able to play recorded CDs at home.
