Liquid cooling was once an option for high end builds, but now the feature has become popular with more affordable coolers as well. But for those who want to save even more, why not try to create a home solution? This is what a moder tried to do, transforming the processor’s own IHS into the CPU block.
Play aside, the work shown in the video below was not simple. IHS is an acronym for Integrated Heat Spreader, basically the metal dissipping that is directly coupled to processors. The Modder in question of the OCTPPUS channel used machinery to sculpt canals directly on IHS, imitating the design style we see in normal blocks for liquid cooling systems.
To make things very homemade, the liquid reservoir in this system is literally a plastic bucket. From time to time it is still necessary to use a bottle to change the liquid.
The processor used in the project was a core i9-14900ks, and the results were variable. The video shows performance tests, with very floating temperatures. It is to be expected, since the contact surface of the mod is smaller than we usually find in commercial coolers.
Homemade liquid cooling may not be the best solution
As you ask yourself for a modder why you do a customization, most of the time the answer will be “to see if it was.” The project in question has created a liquid cooling system certainly far from ideal, but it is still impressive-especially the IHS work of Core i9-14900ks.
