A YouTube modder got tired of laptop versions of components that sacrifice performance for portability and decided to take matters into his own hands. So he built his own laptop from scratch using only desktop parts.
As you might expect, the project involved a lot of customization and a lot of 3D printing, over the course of more than 14 months of work. The entire process is summarized in an incredibly interesting step-by-step guide, which you can watch in the video below:
The host of the Socket Science channel explains that he used a Ryzen 5 5600X as a processor, accompanied by a Radeon RX 6600 GPU. The motherboard is a mini-ITX from Gigabyte, model A520I AC. Finally, we have extremely low-profile DDR4 memories.
Among the engineering solutions involved in the notebook’s design, the cooling scheme stands out. Socket Science ordered separate heatpipes and heatsinks to assemble the structure itself, and even used a metal flashlight to bend the pipes. The fan was made using 3D printing, reusing the original motor from the video card fans.
Is a laptop without a battery a scam?
The end result of the notebook with desktop parts is impressive. Socket Science took the time to add some finishing touches, giving the project more credibility. It really does look like a huge notebook, with excellent performance.
However, the Dr. Frankenstein of notebooks admits that he took a shortcut to finish the project. With the excuse that gaming notebooks are rarely used without being plugged in, he chose not to put a battery in the device.

Autonomy is certainly an important element in the portability of a notebook, so it would be interesting to see some solution for using the device without being plugged in. That’s why the host even comments in the video that he might revisit the project to find a solution in this regard.
