Rumors that Microsoft was developing a portable PC gaming device were partially confirmed this week when Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer revealed that the company is working on prototypes.
Despite confirming the plans, Spencer indicated that the product is still far from being launched, and many changes could still be made depending on market conditions during that time.

Microsoft could capitalize on growth in gaming laptop market
The idea of high-performance laptops for PC gaming has become increasingly popular, especially after the success of Nintendo’s Switch, which became the company’s second best-selling console.
This ended up encouraging other brands to explore this growing demand. Among the new releases are the Steam Deck, from Valve, and the ROG Ally, from Asus, which has a strong integration with Microsoft, allowing access to Game Pass and improved support for Windows games. These devices have been setting a new standard for portable gaming experiences, and Microsoft appears to be eyeing this niche.
The company’s exploration into new devices shows that it is ready for a broader strategy that goes beyond the traditional Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. With the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has grown its ecosystem, including bringing exclusive titles from the Xbox on rival consoles like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.
Additionally, the company has invested in Game Pass, with a library of games accessible to PC and mobile gamers, including cloud gaming. Interest in a portable device could become more of an extension of this strategy, ensuring that Microsoft can reach even more gamers.
What could a portable Xbox bring?
Even though the idea of an exclusive portable console from Microsoft may seem very attractive to fans, it is still necessary to consider that it would arrive somewhat “late” to the party, mainly because it would only happen for a long time. So, what would it bring differently or better compared to the competition that is already established, such as the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally and the Switch itself?
Microsoft already has a line of Surface laptops and could, theoretically, adapt one of these devices for high-performance games, but the development of a gaming-focused laptop requires specific adjustments that are still being studied.
Phil Spencer highlighted that Microsoft considers all possibilities for expansion and does not rule out changes in route if the market follows a new direction. The company already went through this when it decided to abandon the development of a streaming box for TV, which would allow access to Game Pass without the need for a physical console. Instead, it chose to work directly with smart TV manufacturers to integrate the service.
The promise of a mobile games store for Xbox, announced some time ago, has also yet to materialize. Still, Spencer believes the future of gaming points to open platforms, where players and developers have more options and fewer limitations.
“I think we are moving in the right direction. This idea of open platforms, where users and creators have more options, is gaining momentum, right?”
