Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix, the world’s leading memories manufacturers, have come together to introduce a new module format called Socamm. These components use LPDDR5X components and have appeared earlier this year, but now they make their official debut to be used on NVIDIA’s new GB300 Blackwell Ultra systems.

Large companies expect to use SOCAMM to replace the currently popular RDIMM modules in the professional segment. According to the disclosure, a Module Socamm has only one third, more or less, of a RDIMM, measuring 14 x 90mm.

In this small space, the new technology incorporates stacks of up to four LPDDR5X 16-Die. The first components in Micron format reach up to 128GB capacity, and the manufacturer promises a potential of up to 9.6gt/s. However, it does not say how much its first modules are actually reached.

In addition, when using LPDDR5X chips, SOCAMM modules offer more efficiency than traditional format. Also according to Micron, the energy required to feed 128GB of RDIMM module capacity is three times higher than necessary for the same volume in Socamm.

SOCAMM brings modularity to LPDDR5X

Famously LPDDR5X modules appear soldiers in plates in both the professional and domestic segment. Generally, companies that choose format need to sacrifice the possibility of upgrades due to greater energy efficiency occupying less physical space in their systems.

The idea of SOCAMM is to bring the concept of modularity we find in DIMM modules to LPDDR5X technology. Nvidia, for example, has optimized its GB200 Grace Blackwell chips to LPDDR5X because of the highest memory band, so its machines use welded components.

SOCAMM modules, in turn, should allow future upgrades to GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra servers. It is not known, at the moment, if technology will one day reach the Jedec standard for other companies or will be maintained as a solution that owns their creative companies with Nvidia.
