Micron is one of the most recent beneficiaries of the billion-dollar investments in subsidies that the US government has distributed through the CHIPS Act. The company received direct financing of US$6.1 billion, with the promise of increasing the production capacity of advanced memories in the country.
According to information from the US Department of Commerce, Micron will use the financing as a “first step” in its 20-year plan for the region. The company wants to invest a total of US$100 billion in its factories in NY and another US$25 billion in Idaho over these two decades, with the promise of creating more than 20 thousand jobs.
Micron has plans to invest at least $50 billion of that money over the next decade, promising to boost U.S. memory production from less than 2% currently to approximately 10% by 2035.
“Memory chips are fundamental to all advanced technologies, and thanks to the bipartisan CHIPS ACT, America is rebuilding its ability to produce these critical capabilities,” said Gina Raimondo, Secretary of Commerce.

Thanking the government for the investment, the company took the opportunity to highlight its origins in the USA.
“As the only U.S.-based memory manufacturer, Micron is uniquely positioned to bring cutting-edge memory manufacturing to the U.S., strengthening the country’s technological leadership and fueling advanced innovation.”
The company’s statement is part of its commitment to receive investment from the CHIPS Act, which requires the company to manufacture its most advanced components in the country.
