Micron plans to build a new factory for HBM memories in Japan, more specifically in Hiroshima, where it already has operations. According to a report from Nikkei Asia, the company intends to invest a total of ¥1.5 trillion in the new facility, the equivalent of approximately US$9.6 billion – or R$51 billion.

Micron’s expansion to manufacture more HBM is part of Japan’s most recent incentive policies, which should offer subsidies to the company in this expansion. The website reports that the Japanese Ministry of Economy intends to offer a total of Â¥500 billion for the project, equivalent to a third of Micron’s intended total investment.

The new factory will be part of Micron’s existing industrial park, so construction should be accelerated. Construction is expected to begin in May 2026, with products beginning to be produced at scale around 2028.

Japan targets HBM to avoid falling behind in the AI segment

As we know, HBM memory modules are preferred by AI accelerator manufacturers, which has resulted in high demand for the components.

The Japanese government has taken steps to better position itself in the race to hype new technology, as illustrated by Rapidus speeding up its semiconductor factories in increasingly advanced processes.

Increasing local HBM production can help national companies obtain components at more affordable prices, in addition to the fact that demand for products is such that the memory market currently suffers from a widespread shortage.

This isn’t the first time Micron has benefited from Japan’s investments in modernizing its chip manufacturing infrastructure, Tom’s Hardware reports. The company already intends to produce DRAM components using EUV machinery at its Hiroshima campus. To achieve this, it will invest Â¥500 billion, receiving an incentive of Â¥200 billion from the Japanese government.

The first samples of LPDDR5X memories made using the 1γ process with the technology began shipping in May this year.
