News reports from Taiwan reveal that Micron has acquired not just one, but three new factories to expand its production capacity. The company purchased the facilities from display manufacturer AUO, with an investment of approximately US$253 million. That’s roughly R$1.4 billion at the current exchange rate.

According to TechPowerUp, of the three plants purchased, two have already been closed, but one remains in operation. This plant will apparently continue to produce LCDs for AUO, while also working for Micron. It is not known whether this will be a temporary arrangement or if it was part of the sale agreement for the facility.

Micron hasn’t gone into detail about its plans for the new fabs, but it’s easy to speculate. The company has previously announced that it will test wafers in the new space, and increase its production of current and future DRAM modules across all of its plants. The interest in expanding, however, could be justified by plans for HBM.

As we know, HBM memories have been the preferred choice of many AI accelerator manufacturers, especially the largest of them all: Nvidia. Thus, companies working in the area are investing in the technology, and Micron is no different. Sources in the Taiwanese market indicate that the company’s expansion focus will be precisely on HBM.

Micron in competition for HBM

Micron’s name hasn’t been mentioned much in recent rumors about HBM development, but the company is in a race with SK Hynix and Samsung to share in the exponential gains brought about by the AI boom.

More about memories:

All three companies are already capable of HBM3E, and now we’re seeing the push for HBM4. We’ve already heard rumors of SK Hynix and Samsung starting production in the second half of this year, so it’s safe to assume Micron isn’t going to be left behind. With its investment in expanding its manufacturing capacity in Taiwan, it shouldn’t be long before we see some rumors or leaks about the company’s plans for the technology.
