Micron Announces First PCIe Gen 6 SSD for Data Center Ecosystems

Micron announced today, August 5, the debut of its SSD technology for data centers on the PCIe Gen 6 interface. The company says it is the first to offer this type of product, enabling the establishment of the data center ecosystem on PCIe Gen 6.

The new technology will be presented during the Flash Memory Summit (FMS) 2024, in a keynote by Raj Narasimhan, one of Micron’s executives. Titled “Data at the Heart of AI”, the use of technology to drive artificial intelligence will be the focus of the talk.

Micron has clearly chosen to reserve the details of its new SSD for the presentation, which will take place on the 7th. As such, not much information was released about the solution. The manufacturer limited itself to reporting only its sequential read bandwidth, which exceeds 26GB/s.

“By making this technology available to partners, Micron is advancing the PCIe Gen 6 ecosystem,” the company said in a statement. “This achievement joins the recent announcement of the world’s fastest data center SSD, the Micron 9550, and further cements the company’s position as a leader in AI storage.”

Micron Focuses on AI at FMS 2024

Following the current trend for any technology company, Micron intends to highlight the importance of its memory products in AI processing during FMS 2024. Thus, a good part of its lectures at the event address the topic.
