Microchip announces new high-end controller for PCIe Gen 5 SSDs

Microchip announced this week the launch of its new high-performance controller for SSDs on the PCIe Gen 5 interface. The Flashtec NVMe 5016 is aimed at enterprise use, supports up to 16 channels and reaches speeds of over 14GB/s in reading.

“Data center technology needs to evolve to keep pace with the significant advancements being made in AI and machine learning (ML),” said Pete Hazen, vice president of data center solutions at Microchip. “Our fifth-generation Flashtec NVMe controller is designed to lead the market in meeting the growing need for high-performance, high-efficiency SSDs.”

The Flashtec NVMe 5016 will be used in SSDs with random read performance of up to 3.5M IOPS, offering efficiency of 2.5GB per watt. In addition, the manufacturer highlights the Error Correction Code (ECC) feature in the controller, which automatically detects and corrects data corruption.

The Flashtech NVMe 5016 also incorporates technologies focused on data security and integrity. Dual-signature authentication, support for multiple security standards, and end-to-end information protection with overlap are among the features listed. The controller also includes a RAID-based recovery mechanism in the event of data center failures.

Partners praise Microchip

Microchip’s partners expected to adopt the controller in future products include Kioxia, Solidigm and Micron. Greg Matson, senior vice president of strategic planning at Solidigm, said:

“Microchip’s latest Flashtec PCIe controller, utilizing advanced 6nm technology, meets the power optimization requirements for demanding applications. Its flexible architecture delivers the processing power needed for AI workloads in a compact package.”

It’s interesting to note that Solidigm is one of the only manufacturers in the industry today with SSDs over 60TB. The brand belongs to SK Hynix, which has plans to enter the segment using its own name as well.
