The MacOS 26 Tahoe update of Apple’s operating system arrives later this year, bringing a collection of new features to the company’s devices. However, Update also features the official support for MacBook notebooks and Mac computers with Intel processors.

Products like 16 ”MacBook Pro 2019 and 13” MacBook Pro 2020, as well as the IMAC 2020 and MAC Pro 2019 use Intel processors rather than Apple’s own hardware. They will receive MacOS 26 Tahoe, but this will be your last update provided by the manufacturer.

After the new operating system arrived, Apple also promises safety updates by 2028 for these devices. That is, up to two years after the arrival of MacOS 27, the oldest devices with Intel CPUS will still be receiving some protection, but only for security, without the introduction of new features.

Apple also prepares the end of Rosetta 2

As might be expected, closing the Intel CPUS Apple devices also means the end of the Rosetta 2 tool used to facilitate software translation between Intel and Apple platforms.

Rosetta 2 will still work on MacOS 26 Tahoe and MacOS 27, but Apple would have encouraged developers to focus on native apple silicon apps on WWDC25.

“Apple Silicon allows us to reach things that were previously unimaginable, and it’s time to put all our focus and innovation there,” said Matthew Firlik, one of Apple’s executives.

After the next Apple operating system update, Rosetta 2 will be limited to some specific apps, such as older games that depends on Intel features to work.

MacOS 26 Tahoe can also bring the end of hackintosh

As the Hardware Tom is well remembers, the end of the official support to Intel processors brought by MacOS 26 Tahoe can also mean the end of the famous hackintosh – non -Apple computers with installed macas.

The configuration of Apple operating systems for Intel processors facilitated their port for unlicensed devices. Now it will be much more complex to do this type of port, and the end result may no longer be worth it.

It is to imagine that Apple, famous for its closed ecosystem, sees this as an extra advantage for the closure of the support.
