Loongson’s 3C6000 CPU Compared to Intel Xeon Silver 4314

According to Loongson, the 3C6000 CPU – announced in February 2024 – is as fast as the 16-core Intel Xeon Silver 4314 processor. The information was shared at the 2024 Global DIgital Economy Conference in Lhasa, China.

The Chinese manufacturer’s CPU also has 16 cores with a microarchitecture derived from the LA664, which supports multithreading technology and is equipped with four DDR4-3200 and 64 PCIe Gen4 memory interfaces.

It is notable that Loongson did not release the benchmarks for its 3C6000 CPU, but if the information is confirmed, it is a major advance for the Chinese market – even when compared to processors launched at the end of 2021.

The manufacturer has stated in the past that the microarchitecture they are using would have instructions per clock (IPC) performance compatible with what is seen in AMD Zen3 cores. With results close to the Intel Xeon Silver 4314, this remains in line with their expectations and is a new leap towards getting closer to current CPUs.

However, even with this advance, Loongson remains far behind other manufacturers with the arrival of the 3C6000 CPU. Its launch will only take place in the last quarter of 2024 and production should only see a major boost in 2025 – following four years and three generations behind Intel in the server market.

Another aspect worth noting is the use of “LoongLink” technology. In short, it is an interconnect that enables chiplet-to-chiplet communication – much like AMD’s Infinity Fabric and NVIDIA’s NVLink. It makes the processor just a “building block” for CPUs with a higher core count.

In addition to the 3C6000 processor, Loongson is also planning to launch the 3D6000 with dual chiplet, 32 cores and 64 threads, in addition to the 3E6000 with quad chiplet, 64 cores and 128 threads – however, none of them have a market launch forecast and could arrive either at the end of 2024 or at the beginning of 2025.
