Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, finally let someone build him a new Linux PC on camera, and that someone was Linus Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips. And, perhaps, the name of the channel was of great importance in the decision.

In the video, the two Linus made a lot of jokes about “there is only one real Linus”, including references to Highlander. They also talked about ECC and Linus Torvalds, the Linus who created Linux, made a hardware choice that might interest GPU enthusiasts: he chose an Intel Arc B580 graphics card.

And, unfortunately, in almost an hour of video, the many jokes meant that there was no explanation as to why this card was chosen.

The surprise of the choice is greater when one considers that Torvalds did not choose an AMD Radeon, known for its strong open source driver foundations. He definitely didn’t choose NVIDIA, which fits with his “NVIDIA moment”.

For those who don’t remember the occasion, below is a video from 2012 that recalls the case.

In the case of the conversation between the two Linus, Sebastian, from Linus Tech Tips, points out that the “obvious choice for Linux” would have been a Radeon card. AND, then casually mentions that Torvalds specifically asked for an Arc.

Good choice

The Intel ARC B580 is a serious option for gamers. And that’s even considering that Intel doesn’t have many models on the market. The board delivers high performance and efficiency at a competitive price. At Kabum, the Challenger and Steel Legends models are available for R$2,420.41 and R$2,541.67.

The blue team has invested in its series of GPUs. And an August update for Arc Pro GPUs brought 80% gains and new features in Project Battlematrix. This shows that the company, despite the crisis, is serious about development.

The Arc B580 is a mid-range GPU with 12GB of memory, powerful enough to run games like Battlefield 6. However, Linus Torvalds is not a gamer, so the chances of this specific card using ray tracing are slim to none. However, if someone wants to copy the design, they already know.

Torvalds also said he wants ECC memory, hates noisy systems, and prefers hardware that works with mainline kernels rather than conflicts with them. Intel’s open graphics platform fits perfectly into this worldview.

Thus, the “perfect Linux PC”, for Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, ends up with a Threadripper, ECC memory and an Intel Arc. B580.

For those interested in something similar, but want to change the GPU, other options available at Kabum are the Asrock Arc A310 for R$968.11, the Arc A380 for R$1,268.61, the Arc B570 for R$1,829.99 and the Asrock Arc A750 for R$2,249.90.
