Lexar Launches World’s First Steel-Coated SD Cards

Storage drive manufacturer Lexar this week introduced new SD cards in its Armor line. The big difference in its latest products is that they are completely covered in stainless steel. According to the company, these are the first products of their kind in the world.

Lexar’s new steel cards are the Armor Gold SD UHS-II and Armor Silver SD UHS-II. Both versions will be available in capacities of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, so the difference is in speed.

Unfortunately, Lexar didn’t provide any technical details on the performance of its new steel SD cards. In the promotional images, however, we can see the performance of the 1TB models. Both the Gold and Silver 1TB cards promise up to 280MB/s read, while the gold version reaches 205MB/s write and the silver one only reaches 160MB/s. So, we can expect a similar difference in the other capacity options as well.

Of course, for those looking for a lot of storage or a lot of performance, Lexar’s new Armor models are easily surpassed. The idea here is to offer a lot of durability. Thus, in addition to the body being highly resistant to bending and other physical damage, the steel SD cards also have IP68, resistance against water and dust.

Lexar works across multiple segments

The manufacturer seems to want to promote its new cards to people who use their equipment in adverse conditions. Photographers on trails, climbs and the like who need products capable of withstanding less than ideal storage conditions.

The Armor line also includes portable and protected external SSDs. A model was announced in July of this year.

But it’s worth remembering that Lexar doesn’t just work with laptops. Still speaking of SSDs, this year we saw the debut of a new PCIe 4 option prepared for the PS5, and another PCIe 5.0, which even comes with a small RGB fan in the center of the heatsink.
