Lexar announces SSDs for the PS5 with up to 8TB of capacity

Lexar has unveiled its new line of Play 2280 SSDs this week. By even including “Play” in the product names, the manufacturer wants to promote the new drives for the PlayStation 5. There are three capacity options, reaching up to 8TB, but only the 4TB version is currently available.

The Lexar Play 2280 can reach up to 7,400MB/s in read speeds, and 6,500MB/s in write speeds, according to the manufacturer. As recommended for SSDs in consoles, the products also come with a heatsink, which in this case is very discreet. The drives also come with HMB and SLC dynamic cache.

“The Play 2280 SSD is the perfect companion for PS5, offering plenty of additional storage, the ability to play games directly from the drive, and the performance gamers demand,” said Sherry Chiang, marketing manager for Lexar.

Unfortunately, Lexar did not provide random read performance data, which is generally considered more important for gaming performance. However, the company highlights durability of up to 3200TBW for the 4TB SSD.

Lexar will make more options available later this year

As mentioned earlier, Lexar opted to only offer the 4TB drive when it launched the Play 2280. The drive is listed for $380 on the official website. However, the company has already announced the arrival of 2TB and 8TB options in the fourth quarter, without revealing their prices.
