Lenovo has announced the launch of its compact Thinkcenter Neo Ultra, a high-performance desktop that aims to compete in the market with the Mac Studio (equipped with the M2 Max chip).

The model does not fit the definitions of “mini PC” because it has a volume of 3.6 L (dimensions of 195 x 191 x 108 mm, supporting up to about 3.5 kg) – however, it ends up being more compact than a conventional case. Despite its reduced size, it goes on sale with a complete I/O interface.

Lenovo’s Thinkcenter Neo Ultra has CPU options ranging from the Core i5-14500 (14 cores, 6 performance and 8 efficiency) to the Core i9-14900 (24 cores, 8 performance and 16 efficiency) – including regular and vPro SKUs.

In terms of memory, the user can select options ranging from 16 GB (1x 16 GB) to 64 GB (2x 32 GB) of DDR5-4800. The only graphics card option is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 for desktop – with the four display connectors directly connected to the rear I/O.

Lenovo also brings to the Thinkcenter Neo Ultra two M.2-2280 Gen4 slots, storage options with 1x 256GB Gen4 up to 2x 1TB Gen4, network connectivity with 2.5 GbE Ethernet and WiFi 6E. On the front panel there are two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C ports with 20 Gbps and two USB 3.2 Gen2 ports with 10 Gbps + four additional USB 3.2 Type-A ports at the back.

Lenovo eyes AI

It’s important to note that Lenovo is keeping an eye on new technologies, allowing the Thinkcenter Neo Ultra’s components to be swapped out in the future. The processor and memory, for example, are snapped in and allow the user to upgrade them whenever they want in the future.

The system will also allow the use of independent NPU cards – for use with artificial intelligence. The compact computer supports M.2 NPU AI Cards, small processors that have up to 20 TOPS.

Lenovo’s ThinkCenter Neo Ultra is now on sale in Australia, priced at $3,299; the same price as a Mac Studio in the country. The Kinara-Ara-2 M.2 NPU card for AI support can be found for $200, and both are available immediately.
