This week, Kioxia presented the new generation of its portable SSD, the Exceria Plus G2. Measuring less than 10cm, the small drive comes in capacities of 500GB, 1TB and 2TB, covered in a compact aluminum case that promises great durability. Additionally, it is compatible with PCs, mobile devices and consoles.
Using the USB 3.2 Gen2 interface to connect, the Kioxia Exceria Plus G2 delivers speeds of up to 1,050MB/s in reading, and up to 1,000MB/s in writing. The device has a Type-C port to connect, but it also comes with a USB-C to A cable.
Evidently, performance is not the main attraction of Kioxia’s new portable SSD. The product measures just 72 x 40 x 11.8mm, weighing 42g. In other words, it literally fits in your pocket. Therefore, it also has a MIL-STD-810H shock resistance certificate. The test involves dropping the SSD to the ground from a height of 122cm, and the Exceria Plus G2 continued to function after being dropped 26 times.
Kioxia highlights that its new portable SSD is compatible “straight out of the box” with current systems, which includes PlayStation and Xbox. The company also highlights its drive management software, SSD Utility Management Software, which offers diagnostic tools and allows you to put a password on the device to protect your files.
The Exceria Plus G2 arrives in the last quarter of 2024, but the manufacturer has not yet released prices for the portable drive.
Kioxia wants more and more layers on SSD
Kioxia highlights that it uses BiCS FLASH 3D technology in the NAND memories in its new SSD. Interestingly, it was the company that invented NAND technology, in 1987 when it was still called Toshiba.

And now the company wants to be the first to achieve 1,000 layer stacking in this type of memory. According to Kioxia, we will see the first NAND chips with this impressive number appearing by the year 2027.
