TSMC’s factory in Japan officially began operating this week, marking one of the Taiwanese company’s first new facilities to be ready. The plant, called Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), is in Kumamoto and will work mainly with more mature lithography processes.
In addition to the important advancement for TSMC, JASM also brings considerable milestones for the Land of the Rising Sun. This is the first factory capable of producing chips with FinFET transistors in the country, for example. It will manufacture in the 40nm, 28nm, 22nm, 16nm and 12nm processes, with estimated production of up to 55,000 300mm wafers per month (WSPM).
As mentioned previously, these are more mature lithography processes. TSMC has the most advanced chip manufacturing technologies in the world, reaching up to 2nm. Larger processes, however, are still widely used in the manufacture of less complex devices, such as cars and other simple consumer electronics.
This market is very strong in Japan, which is why the country’s government helped establish JASM with subsidies equivalent to US$3 billion. Adding investments from TSMC and its partners, a total of approximately US$8.27 billion was invested in the factory.
Sony among investors in TSMC factory in Japan – second facility on the way
JASM is owned by TSMC, with 86.5% of its shares. Investments from its partners, however, guaranteed a share of ownership to other companies, such as Sony and Toyota. These Japanese companies hold 6% and 2% of the company’s shares for the factory, respectively.

And this partnership should be extended, as there are already plans for a second facility in Kumamoto. Construction should begin next year, in the fourth quarter. This new factory, yes, must create processors in processes currently considered more advanced, such as 6nm and 7nm. However, the forecast is that it will only start producing in 2027.
Meanwhile, TSMC’s factory in Arizona, USA, is expected to open in January after reportedly being delayed due to the election.
