A OLX identified a 10.3% drop in digital scams applied in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period in the previous year. There were 3,091 frauds identified this year, against 3,447 in the first six months of 2023. The estimated loss, although high, was 37% lower, totaling R$245 million. The information comes from a study carried out by OLX, which analyzes, based on market data, the scenario of scams in the digital environment that occurred between January and June 2024.

The survey also found that more than half of the scams in the period were related to the following methods:

  • False payment (50.4%), an increase of 64% compared to 2023;
  • Account hacking (22.2%);
  • False advertisement (14.3%);
  • Collection of personal data (12.3%).

The last two methods mentioned in the list above saw a reduction of 20% and 46%, respectively, when comparing the first halves of 2023 and 2024.

“The reduction in the number of scams is an important factor for the online buying and selling market, which has been working hard to develop new technologies to combat fraud, in line with actions to raise awareness among users about how fraudsters act and how to avoid them. However, these crimes are still recurrent and cause harm not only to the victims, but also to the country’s economy. To prevent these scams, it is necessary to continue the ongoing work of combating fraud and informing the population,” explains Beatriz Soares, VP of Products at the OLX Group.

iPhone 16 will be produced in three countries, including Brazil

52% of people who use Android phones have been mocked by those who use iPhones, survey reveals

“Many criminals use social engineering techniques to gain the trust of victims, convincing them, for example, to migrate transactions to other platforms or make advance payments. In this way, they can obtain sensitive personal data and even payments for products or services that do not exist. Users can often be the most vulnerable link in the chain, so the more information there is on the subject, the fewer people will be deceived,” reinforces Beatriz.

iPhone is the product most targeted by scammers

São Paulo is the state with the highest incidence of fraud (47%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (15%), Minas Gerais (9%) and Paraná (5%)

Cell phones and smartphones top the list of products most targeted by scammers, accounting for 40% – iPhone models account for 32% of the total. Video games are in second place, accounting for 22% of frauds, with PlayStation consoles accounting for 15% of scams. Computers come next, with 9%.

The study analyzed data from the Brazilian digital market, including websites, apps and digital accounts from January to June 2023 and 2024, on a base of around 20 million accounts opened on online platforms.
