A Apple has just updated its list of obsolete products. And one of the company’s most popular smartphones, the iPhone 6is now part of this group.

When an Apple product is classified as obsolete, it has important implications for consumers. Essentially, it means that the device is no longer eligible to receive repair services at official Apple stores or authorized service centers. The company defines a product as obsolete when it has no longer been distributed for sale for at least seven years.

Obsolete is not vintage

It’s important to note that there is a distinction between “classic” (or vintage) and obsolete products in Apple’s classification.

Classic products are those that stopped being sold between five and seven years ago. For these devices, Apple may still offer repair services as long as the necessary parts are available.

In the case of obsolete products, such as the iPhone 6, the only exception to the no-repair rule are battery replacements on MacBooks, which can be carried out for up to ten years after the product was last distributed.

iPhone 6 turned 10 years old

The iPhone 6 has had an interesting journey to get to this point. Launched in September 2014, the device significantly changed the design of iPhones, introducing a larger 4.7-inch screen and more rounded edges. It joined the list of classic products in September 2022, and now, two years later, it is officially considered obsolete.

It is worth remembering that the iPhone 6 Plus, the larger version launched together with the iPhone 6, had already been classified as obsolete in April this year. The difference in timing is due to the fact that the smaller model continued to be sold in some countries for longer.

Talking a little more about the iPhone 6, it was launched with iOS 8. The smartphone featured a processor A8 the 64 bits, 1GB the RAM and storage options of 16GB, 64GB or 128GB. Its 8MP rear camera introduced significant improvements in image quality, while the 1.2MP front camera enabled FaceTime calls in HD.

The iPhone 6 was also the first model to support Apple Pay, the company’s mobile payment service. With its slim design measuring just 6.9mm thick and weighing 129 grams, the device has set a new standard for stylish and functional smartphones.

Other Apple devices also entered the obsolete list

In addition to the iPhone 6, Apple also added other devices to the list of obsolete products. The latest generations of iPod nano and shuffle, launched in 2015 and discontinued in 2017, are now also considered obsolete. These devices represent the end of an era for Apple’s iconic portable music players.

In addition, the 12-inch MacBook released in 2017 and the sixth-generation iPad were included in the list of classic products. This means these devices may still receive limited support depending on parts availability.

For users who still have an iPhone 6 or other devices now classified as obsolete, it is important to consider upgrade options or seek repair alternatives outside of Apple’s official network, if necessary.
