Summary
- The iPhone 17 sold 14% more than the iPhone 16 in the first ten days in the US and China.
- The entry-level iPhone 17 model introduced the 120 Hz ProMotion screen and 18 MP front camera.
- The iPhone 17 maintained the price of the iPhone 16, with improvements to the A19 chip, storage and connectivity.
The iPhone 17 had sales 14% higher than the iPhone 16 in China and the United States, the brand’s two main markets, when comparing the first ten days of each model on the market.
Much of the good performance is due to the cheaper iPhone 17, which saw a 33% increase in sales in both countries. In China, the performance was even more impressive, with almost double the number of cell phones sold.
The numbers arouse interest for the coming months. Throughout 2023 and 2024, Apple had difficulties in the Chinese market, with a strong recovery from Huawei and tight competition with other local brands.
Why is the iPhone 17 selling well?
According to Mengmeng Zhang, senior analyst at Counterpoint, the iPhone 17 is “very attractive to consumers, offering a great return on the money invested”.
Among the improvements compared to the iPhone 16, Zhang cites the new chip, the improved screen, the larger storage and the new front camera — all while the price remains the same. Counterpoint also indicates that coupons and discounts made the iPhone 17 even more interesting in the Chinese market.

In the US, the consultancy points out that the iPhone 17 Pro Max showed a stronger market performance than the previous generation. The company attributes this to incentives for changing devices offered by the country’s three largest operators.
What’s new with the iPhone 17?
The changes mentioned by Counterpoint caught attention at the launch of the iPhone 17. The entry-level model in the family brought, for the first time, a ProMotion screen, with variable refresh rates of up to 120 Hz. This is a feature easily found in competitors, but, at Apple, it was restricted to the most expensive models.
Another interesting new feature is the new 18 megapixel front camera, capable of recording selfies vertically or horizontally without having to rotate the device. Among the other improvements are the A19 chip, which promises 50% more CPU performance; the N1 chip, with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6; and minimum storage of 256 GB.
Abroad, the 256 GB iPhone 17 has a suggested price of US$799; in 2024, the 128 GB iPhone 16 arrived on the market with the same price. In Brazil, this year’s model costs R$7,999, R$200 more than last year’s model at its launch.
