The microcode that Intel has made available to its partners to create new BIOSes on their motherboards in order to contain the problems of its 13th and 14th generation CPUs can only work in the default profile. Tests on a Gigabyte board show that changing the profile increased the processor voltage.

An important part of Intel’s fix for its processors is to fix the voltage at 1.55V. This is because failures in Raptor Lake-based CPUs start to appear at voltages higher than this. This way, users could still use other profiles on their motherboards that would not impact the processor’s voltage, only its watts or amps.

However, the Actually Hardware Overclocking channel decided to test more advanced profiles on a Z790 Aorus Master X and noticed that the voltage was increasing. Just by turning on the PC, the numbers reached 1.5616V and, during a benchmark, they reached 1.5792V. It’s not that much of a difference, but it already exposes a failed processor to risks.

It’s not known at this time whether this is a feature of Intel’s microcode—which would affect a variety of boards—or specifically Gigabyte’s BIOS. As such, it’s recommended that you keep your mobo on Intel’s default power profile until more information is released.

Intel didn’t mention profiles in its patch

Compared to a widespread bug in processors that for a long time had no known way to fix, keeping your motherboard on the default power profile is a simple thing to do. This is important to note, however, because the details about Intel’s new microcode suggest that it would be okay to change this setting.

To find out more:

The Register notes that the CPU maker has hinted that after the update, the only way to change the voltage of Raptor Lake is to manually adjust it. “Users can disable the eTVB setting in their BIOS if they want to exceed the 1.55V limit,” the company stated.

This suggests that this may be a problem specific to Gigabyte. Neither company has yet commented on the matter.
