In yet another wave of bad luck for Intel, we now have rumors that its 18A process is not as advanced as the company makes it out to be. Reuters sources reveal that the new technology failed tests at Broadcom, which has reportedly been experimenting with 18A wafers in recent months.

According to unofficial reports, Broadcom has concluded that the 18A process is not yet ready to move into mass production. The company has not directly addressed the rumors, but a spokesperson said that Broadcom is “evaluating Intel Foundry’s product and service offerings and has not completed that evaluation.”

Intel also spoke to Reuters, denying the rumors:

“The Intel 18A is powered on, healthy and performing well, and we remain fully on track to begin high-volume manufacturing next year.”

Intel’s next-generation chipmaking technology is important to the company’s plans to recoup its revenue from Intel Foundry, so Broadcom is just one of several potential partners, as the company noted: “There is significant interest in Intel 18A across the industry, but as a matter of policy, we do not comment on specific customer conversations.”

Chip manufacturing is key to Intel’s recovery

Manufacturing semiconductors for third parties is one of the main paths that Intel intends to follow in its search for recovery. To this end, the company has invested in expanding its facilities and is seeking large customers such as NVIDIA.

More about Intel:

If problems with the 18A manufacturing process are confirmed, the impact will not only be felt in trading with other companies, but also in the company’s shares. According to Reuters, Intel lost $7 billion in its manufacturing segment last year, and executives expect the division to break even only in 2027.
