Intel Xeon 6 with 128 cores sets new price record, costing US$17,800

A week after the launch of its new Xeon 6 line of processors for professional use, Intel finally reveals the prices of the products. The series is led by the Intel Xeon 6980P, which costs $17,800, setting a new price record for a modern x86 CPU. The value is equivalent to more or less R$96,405, at the current price.

Since the top of the Xeon 6 line features a component with 128 high-performance cores, we can say that the cost represents US$139 per core – R$753. The prices of other processors in the line were also revealed, check below:

• Xeon 6980P: US$ 17.800 (R$ 96.405) | 128 núcleos e 256 threads
• Xeon 6979P: US$ 15.750 (R$ 85.302) | 120 núcleos e 240 threads
• Xeon 6972P: US$ 14.600 (R$ 79.074) | 96 núcleos e 192 threads
• Xeon 6952P: US$ 11.400 (R$ 61.742) | 96 núcleos e 192 threads (clock baixo)
• Xeon 6960P: US$ 13.750 (R$ 74.470) | 72 núcleos e 144 threads

With the exception of the 6952P, all SKUs in Intel’s new line of processors for professional use are more expensive than analogous Epyc models from AMD. The 6952P is an outlier as it is a product with reduced clock rates and seeks to offer a more affordable alternative.

The prices of new Xeon processors have reached a new level, and are even more impressive when compared to current Epyc products. The 6972P, for example, is almost $3,000 more expensive than an Epyc 9654 with the same number of cores.

However, it will be much more interesting to compare these products with AMD’s next series of CPUs aimed at servers, the so-called Epyc Turin. Next week, October 10th, the company will officially reveal its new generation of processors.
